Obituary for Lawrence A LaRoche

Lawrence Albert LaRoche passed in peace on 20 July, 2018.
Larry as he was known by friends grew up in Fitchburg Massachusetts, an old mill town not far from Boston. A bit of an adventurer, upon graduation from high school he joined the United States Marine Corps serving his country for three years. Shortly after his discharge he married Elaine Nancy Gay, the love of his life and moved to Connecticut in 1960 taking a position with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Hartford. It was not long before Larry and Elaine moved to Enfield, purchased their first home, joined Holy Family Parish and began to raise a family.
Enfield in 1960 was a small town with many residents working in Hartford or Springfield, it was nice place to raise a family. If you knew Larry you knew he had a strong commitment to this community. After a few years building aircraft engines he joined the Connecticut State Police serving honorably for 28 years including service as the last Resident State Trooper for the town of East Windsor. He loved being on the move, protecting people and helping to solve the myriad of problems every community faces. As a Trooper he also had two State Police dogs, “Prince” and “Troop”. They were his companion on the job every day and his best friend at home. He always had a touch with animals and people often called him the “dog whisperer.” In his spare time he served as a volunteer fireman (1963-1965), Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 888 (1971-1976) and as a member of the Governors Horse Guard for many years. He loved to hike, camp, canoe and hunt earning the nick name “the Old Buck.” In the year 2000 he purchased 26 acres in the North East Kingdom of Vermont and built his dream cabin. He loved being at his cabin and close to nature. He served as an excellent role model for the young people growing up in his neighborhood, people always looked up to Larry and sought his advice. In retirement he continued to help his neighbors with life’s daily chores, you could always count on Larry helping to shovel you out from a blizzard, fix a car problem or just talk you through any of life’s frustrations. Everyone appreciated Larry and his willingness to help others.
Larry LaRoche lived a good life and leaves behind a brother, sister, wife Elaine of 59 years, three children and ten grandchildren. The Old Buck was loved and will be missed by his family, friends and residents of Enfield.
Calling hours will take place on Tuesday, 24 July, from 4-7pm at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels located at 61 South Road, Enfield CT, 06083. A funeral mass will take place at 10am on Wednesday, 25 July, at Holy Family Church located at 23 Simon Road, Enfield CT, 06082. The public is asked to meet at Holy Family Church rather than the funeral home. Internment with military honors will follow immediately at Saint Patrick’sCemetery in Enfield CT (off route 5). Following internment the family will gather with friends at Figaro’s Restaurant located at 90 Elm Street, Enfield CT, 06082.
