He was an avid U.S. Civil War buff and historian. This hobby led him to join the North South Skirmish Association (NSSA) which promotes competitive shooting of Civil War period weapons. He enjoyed many weekends camping and competing with the 20th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Sargent Major made many lifelong friends and treasured those friendships even after he retired due to health issues.
He enjoyed watching his kids' sporting events throughout their childhood and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants.
He is survived by his son Paul Coffey and his wife Anna of Enfield, CT, daughter Jo Ann Lutters and her husband John of West Haven, CT; six grandchildren Joseph Lutters, John Lutters, Jordan Lutters, Jake Lutters, Kendall Coffey and Reese Coffey; two great grandchildren Ezekiel and Eliana. He is also survived by his four brothers: Thomas and Shirley Coffey of Wethersfield, Peter and Gloria Coffey of Windsor Locks, James and Elizabeth Coffey of Eaton, NY, and Joseph and Elvira Coffey of Coventry.
